Discount Calculator

Enter the original price and the discount percentage and see the final price and your saving at once. It also works backwards, to find the discount percentage from two prices, and for the chained discounts of the sales season.

Pick what you want to work out and fill in the two fields. The same calculator does percentages, discounts and increases. For example, 20% of 100 is 20.

Educational estimate, not financial advice. It calculates percentages; for VAT, income tax or interest, use the dedicated calculators.

1

Final price and saving

Choose "reduce a value by a percentage", enter the original price and the discount. The final price is price × (1 − discount ÷ 100); the saving is the difference. A €120 garment at 25% off costs €90 and saves you €30.

2

How much of a discount you really got

When you know both prices and want the percentage, use the "percentage change between two values" mode with the full price as the starting value and the sale price as the final one. From €120 to €90 the change is −25%: the way to check that the sale tag tells the truth.

3

Chained discounts do not add up

30% in the window plus 10% at the till is not 40%. €100 less 30% is €70, and less another 10% is €63: a total discount of 37%. To chain discounts you multiply the factors (0.7 × 0.9 = 0.63), you do not add the percentages. Work out the first discount, then apply the second to the result.

4

VAT included or excluded

In Italian shops the displayed price already includes VAT, so the discount applies to it. In business quotes prices are often net of VAT: apply the discount first and the VAT after, because the tax is charged on the discounted amount. To add or remove VAT there is a dedicated calculator.

Worked example

Example: a jacket costs €150, on sale at 40% off. Reduce 150 by 40% and you get €90, saving €60. The shop adds a further 20% "today only": €90 less 20% is €72. The overall discount on the original €150 is 52%, not 60%.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate a percentage discount?
Final price = price × (1 − discount ÷ 100). For €80 at 30% off: 80 × 0.7 = €56. The saving is 80 − 56 = €24.
How do I get the discount percentage from two prices?
Divide the saving by the full price and multiply by a hundred. From €120 to €90 the saving is €30: 30 ÷ 120 × 100 = 25%.
Are two 20% discounts the same as one 40% discount?
No. The second applies to the already-reduced price: €100 becomes 80 and then 64, a 36% discount, not 40%.
How do I get back to the full price from the sale price?
Divide by the discount factor rather than adding the percentage back. With 30% off: €56 ÷ 0.7 = €80. Adding 30% to 56 would give €72.80, which is wrong.
